Candidates who wish to run as an Independent:
Independent candidates have to submit a petition to the probate judge for a county office on or before 5:00 p.m. on the date of the statewide primary election (June 5th). An election official will then verify the petition signatures and subsequently notify the petitioner as to whether the candidate gained ballot access.

There is no qualifying fee.
The total number of signatures needed is 3% of the electors for governor in the preceding gubernatorial election (2014) from within the specific district.
